Do you offer free consultations?

Short answer is yes! Choosing the right Doctor is a very personal choice. I don’t want you to invest your hard earned money in me, if you don’t think that I will be a good fit for you. That’s why I always offer a free 15 minute consultation, so that you can get to know me and what I can offer. That way, you can make the best decision for yourself and be aware of the options available to you.

Is your practice regulated?

Yes, all Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) are required to fulfill strict educational and regulatory requirements, before being licensed to practice in British Columbia by the College of Naturopathic Physicians of British Columbia. NDs became regulated under the B.C. Medical Act in 1923, and in 1936 the Naturopathic Physicians Act became law in B.C.

A Naturopathic Doctor is a regulated professional, who is proficient in providing a broad based approach to health care, encompassing such treatments as acupuncture, nutritional counselling and plans, herbal treatments and remedies, and a host of other health based approaches. Homeopathy is one of the many treatments that Nauturpathic Doctors can use, however, presently it is not a licensed or regulated profession, on its own.

Most extended health care plans cover naturopathic treatments, often up to $500 a year. Depending on the plan, this can also include lab and diagnostic testing, but supplements usually are not covered. I always recommend checking with your plan provider to confirm. Health Spending Accounts cover 100% of naturopathic visits. Medical Services Plan of British Columbia provides limited coverage for those on Premium Assistance or Social Assistance.

Yes. Many Naturopathic Doctors in British Columbia have prescribing authority, as long as they have fulfilled the licensing requirements established by the CNPBC board and Canadian Pharmacists Association. I have completed the training, fulfilled all requirements, and therefore have prescriptive rights.

Yes, NDs can write lab requisitions and patients can go to any BC LifeLabs location to have the test performed. However, since NDs operate within a private healthcare system, labs fees do apply to patients.

Absolutely! I am set up with the BC Cancer Agency so I can send in your pap smears for analysis.

NDs in BC require a minimum of 8 years post-secondary schooling, including a Bachelors degree, specific medical prerequisites, and a rigorous four year post-graduate Doctorate program at an accredited Naturopathic Medical School. The training involves approximately 1500 hours of basic clinical sciences, 1900 hours of medical therapeutics, specific naturopathic treatment modalities. as well as 1200 hours of extensive clinical training.. NDs must pass two sets of Naturopathic Physician Licensing Exams (NPLEX) administered by the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners (NABNE); the first on biomedical sciences written after second year, and the second on core clinical sciences written post-graduation. In addition to successfully completing NPLEX, NDs in BC must pass the practical board exams held by the College of Naturopathic Physicians of British Columbia (CNPBC).
I graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting from the University of British Columbia, after completing two years of a Bachelor of Science degree. I successfully completed additional medical prerequisites, before commencing the Doctorate program at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine. Should you require assessment or treatment from a specialist (eg. a Cardiologist), you will need a referral from a Medical Doctor. However, I am more than happy to collaborate with your GP, and any other health care practitioners, in order to fulfill your needs.
